Are Cheap Glasses on Shopee and TikTok Shop Suitable for Your Eyes?
By 100glasses Team |
Search for cheap glasses online and you will find listings for “power glasses,” “anti-blue light glasses” and “cermin mata rabun.” Some offer a single power selection at a price that looks hard to beat.
But choosing a power is not the same as ordering glasses made to your prescription. Before buying spectacles on Shopee, TikTok Shop or Pinduoduo, separate three questions: is the sale permitted under Malaysian rules, do the lenses match your prescription and fitting needs, and can the seller substantiate its lens-quality claims?
A bargain isn't a bargain if the glasses don't work. No frame is stylish enough to fix the wrong prescription, and "anti-blue light" on the listing doesn't tell you anything about how the lens was actually made.
Can prescription glasses be sold on Shopee or TikTok Shop in Malaysia?
The Malaysian Optical Council's published online-sale guideline prohibits sales through social media and does not permit the sale of covered optical appliances and contact lenses through ecommerce platforms. Prescription spectacles fall within its optical-appliance scope. MOC guideline.
The Ministry of Health reiterated the platform prohibition in its 3 April 2026 statement. That statement also uses broader language about MDA not issuing approval for online advertising or sale. Its relationship to the MOC's conditional own-website framework needs current clarification; a standalone website should not be treated as automatically approved. MOH statement.
TikTok Shop Malaysia separately lists corrective eyewear in section 3.13 of its prohibited-products policy. A listing being visible does not make it permitted. TikTok Shop Malaysia policy.
This concerns regulated products and sales channels. It is not a claim that every glasses case or fashion accessory has identical regulatory treatment, or that every buyer has committed an offence.
What about Pinduoduo glasses from China?
Pinduoduo introduces a cross-border question. A product offered in China's domestic market does not establish that supplying it into Malaysia complies with Malaysian requirements.
A claimed lens brand or five-star review doesn't prove Malaysian authorisation. That said, "it's from Pinduoduo" doesn't automatically mean counterfeit or badly made either. Judge the product, not the platform name.
Fixed power glasses versus a custom prescription
Many cheap marketplace listings offer preset strengths. Shopee's cermin mata rabun results include reading glasses and myopia products with different advertised power ranges. These are different categories.
If your left eye is -2.00 and your right is -3.50 with astigmatism, a listing offering one power for both sides simply cannot make your glasses. That's not a technicality. It's a deal-breaker.
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Right and left SPH | The main correction can differ between eyes. |
| CYL and AXIS | These describe the prescribed astigmatism correction. |
| PD | Helps position lenses appropriately for the wearer. |
| ADD, when prescribed | Additional near power for relevant multifocal or progressive lenses. |
| Frame fit and other fitting measurements | Some lens designs require more than PD to work in their actual wearing position. |
If a listing only asks you to select “-2.00” and never establishes the other information your prescription needs, do not assume it has been customised for you.
Some marketplace sellers advertise custom prescriptions. It would be inaccurate to say every pair on these platforms has fixed power or fixed PD. Customisation claims also do not resolve the separate regulatory question.
Why does PD matter for glasses?
PD means pupillary distance. Lens positioning needs to correspond to the wearer's eyes and lens design. Unsuitable positioning may cause visual discomfort or difficulty adapting; the effect depends on the prescription and mismatch.
One fixed lens-centre spacing won't suit every face. And just because a form asks for your PD doesn't guarantee the finished glasses were actually made to it.
A 2016 study comparing online and in-store glasses found similar lens quality but flagged real problems with fit, centration and overall acceptability. It's not a test of today's Shopee sellers, but it shows why the complete pair matters, not just the power on the listing. Alderson and colleagues.
If you lack the necessary measurements, ask a registered practitioner. Do not choose a random “average Malaysian PD” because a form requires a number.
Are ready-made reading glasses bad for your eyes?
Ready-made readers can be useful for some adults as spare reading glasses. Their limitations include identical power in both eyes, no individual astigmatism correction and a standard lens-centre arrangement. They are not suitable for every wearer or task. College of Optometrists.
Reading glasses generally address near-vision needs. Myopia glasses address a different refractive need. Do not treat rabun dekat and rabun jauh as equivalent because the products appear together in search results.
The wrong prescription can leave you with blurry vision, headaches and tired eyes. In otherwise healthy adults, wearing the wrong spectacle prescription generally causes discomfort rather than permanent eye damage. American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Persistent symptoms need professional advice. Avoid driving or other visually demanding activities when your vision is unclear.
Are cheap lens coatings always low quality?
A low price doesn't mean bad coatings. But it doesn't mean good ones either. You need actual evidence for what's claimed.
“Anti-blue light,” “HD,” “anti-radiation” and “premium” are not complete technical specifications. Ask what the lenses include:
- An anti-reflective treatment to reduce reflections.
- A hard coating intended to improve scratch resistance.
- Water- or oil-repellent properties that can make cleaning easier.
- A stated UV specification and identifiable lens product.
These properties differ. Scratch-resistant does not mean scratch-proof, and blue-light filtering does not establish coating durability or prescription accuracy. ZEISS's coating explanation.
A Cochrane review found blue-light filtering lenses may not reduce short-term computer-related eyestrain compared with non-filtering lenses. A dramatic blue-light demonstration is not proof of a health benefit. Cochrane review.
Look for an identifiable lens product, written specifications, a clear defect policy and a seller who can explain what you are buying. Photographs, packaging and review stars are not laboratory tests of coating performance.
How to read a cheap glasses listing before you buy
Use the listing to answer specific questions. These examples are illustrative shopping checks, not findings about every seller.
| What the listing says | What it does not establish | The question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| “Power -1.00 to -6.00” | Whether each eye can have a different value or astigmatism correction. | Can the seller make my complete prescription? |
| “Custom prescription” | Whether PD and any other required fitting measurements are collected and checked. | How are the lenses positioned for my eyes and this frame? |
| “Anti-blue light” | Anti-reflective performance, scratch resistance or coating durability. | What specific lens and coatings am I receiving? |
| “Photochromic” | Prescription suitability or how the particular lens behaves in different conditions. | What is the lens model and what performance is specified? |
| “Frame from RM10” | The price of a wearable prescription pair. | What is the total with my lenses and delivery? |
| “Thousands sold” | Correct manufacturing for your individual prescription or regulatory permission. | Who is responsible for dispensing and resolving a problem? |
For example, a shopper whose eyes need different powers should reject a single-strength-only product as a match for that prescription. A shopper replacing a broken frame needs to establish whether the existing lenses can be reused; a similar-looking frame is not proof they will fit. Someone buying a first progressive pair needs more than an attractive product photo and an ADD field: lens suitability and fitting deserve professional attention.
What to check before buying power glasses online
- Use an appropriate current prescription. Do not guess your power from an old shopping order.
- Identify the business and responsible practitioner. Check meaningful business and professional details and applicable product registration through the MDA register.
- Check the configuration. Confirm that required separate-eye values, astigmatism information and fitting measurements can be handled.
- Read the lens specification. A catchy coating label is not enough.
- Compare the complete price. Include lenses, upgrades and delivery.
- Understand aftercare. Establish who handles manufacturing defects, prescription-entry errors and fitting issues.
These checks help assess a service; they do not override Malaysian sales-channel restrictions.
